How personal branding can help you land your dream job

Tips on how to build and grow your personal brand

Personal branding is a process involving strategically planning and executing how you present yourself to others, both in-person and online. It’s all about building a reputation that showcases who you are as a person and what’s most unique about you. This can be a great tool to utilise during a job search, using your personal brand to distinguish yourself from those you may be competing against to make a lasting impression on prospective employers.

Here’s a few tips and tricks on how to build and grow your personal brand, so that you can land your dream job.

Piecing together your personal brand

When creating a personal brand from scratch, there are some key elements you should make sure to include: your vision, mission, message and personality; your target audience; and your unique offer. These elements will dictate what your personal brand strategy will look like, where it will be communicated and how.

Consistency is key

There needs to be alignment between your actions and your personal branding. Whilst your personal brand may show the best, most desirable side of you, it still needs to be authentic. If your actions contradict those of your personal brand, you risk ruining your credibility. Every action you take, every decision you make, every social media post you put out into the world, must align with your personal branding.

Measure your success

There is no point of creating a strategy – no matter how well thought out it is – if you don’t measure its success. When managing your personal brand, it is important to set some Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to monitor you’re the strength and success of your personal branding strategy. Some KPIs may be when an acquaintance refers you to a potential employer, when you are asked to speak at an event or when people start mentioning you online.

Utilise all relevant platforms

When trying to grow your personal brand, make sure you use the platforms that are available to you, and relevant in your field, to communicate your brand to the world. This will look different to everyone. For some, a good platform to utilise is LinkedIn. For others, it may be a podcast. For some it may be a website. And for others it may be a business card. Whichever platform you choose, ensure that it is relevant to your target audience and that it communicates the personal brand that you want to put out.
