Counting on the kids – Why mathematics matters

Numbers make up our everyday life. We work out the 10% tip for our waiter; we divide the bill among the six of us dining out together; we subtract the R37 over charge for a salad that never arrived; and work out whether we can pay off a new car over five years and still have enough money to take a holiday each year.

Maths is all that, and more. The campaign uses the slogan: "Maths is all that. Choosing maths can make you anything you want to be because... maths is in everything" and aims to create a different and exciting vision of mathematics, one that will appeal to school learners.

The posters for the grade 8-10 campaign is daring - a mini-clad, bare-midriffed hottie, flouncing through a flurry of formula with the pay-off line: "Bootylicious: Maths is all that!"; a ball-juggling footballer, angling through algorithms, has the line: "Slick skills: Maths is all that!"

The campaign wants to encourage the learners working out the averages on which teams will get through, practicing those dance moves for the fan parks and get them thinking about smart leadership. AGugu Makhanya, Project Director of Transformation and Growth at SAICA says, it's not all about just play. "Thuthuka Maths Camps will be run during the FIFA World Cup as well."
